Edwardstone takes on the big boys at Sandown on Saturday

Tom has two booked rides at Sandown, one for trainer Nicky Henderson, and one for

trainer Alan King.

The first is at 12:40 BARELY FAMOUS Beaten 55l by sole rival on last appearance; yard has stronger chance with Fable. Tom has a 33% strike rate when riding for Nicky Henderson

showing a +11.38. Nicky Henderson with his hurdlers at Sandown has a 21% strike rate

Next up is the 1:50 EDWARDSTONE Won well at Warwick last time; major contender on hurdles and chase form.

Edwardstone is a horse who needs a strongly-run race to be at his most effective, and, with Dan Skelton’s recent Cheltenham winner Third Time Lucki in the field for Saturday’s Grade 1 Henry VIII Novices’ Chase at Sandown, there will be no hanging around in front.

Alan won this race four years with Sceau Royal, and, though Edwardstone was unlucky to end up on the floor on his first two races over fences, he could not have been more impressive when winning at Warwick last month, and on official ratings he is only 3lb behind Third Time Lucki.

“He jumped super there and was very professional, and that will have done his confidence the world of good,” said Alan, adding:”I know he now tackles Graded company, but there aren’t too many options around at present, and I want to stay at two miles for now.

“Like Warwick, Sandown is a track that takes plenty of jumping, and these are the sort of races we need to be looking at. Edwardstone has worked and schooled well since Warwick, and I’m very happy with him.”
